The way your coffee is ground can also affect the strength of the brew you drink. As a rule if the grind is very coarse (big grains) then the brew will be fairly weak. If the grind is fine (Like sugar or finer even) then the stronger the brew will be. The finer your coffee is ground, the longer it will take to perculate.
Below are a selection of different coffee brewing methods and their corresponding grind.
Cafetiere, French Press, "Plunger" : The grind should be coarse to prevent grinds passing through the mesh - a fine grind will be strong but have bits in.
Filter Coffee Machine, Drip Brewer : This should be a medium or omni - grind. Again a finer grind will make a stronger brew, but could have sediment.
Espresso Machine, Moka Pot : This should always be a fine grind, the espresso should percolate slowly producing a rich "crema"
